So, I started a Substack...
Because sometimes you need more words than an instagram caption or story allows for
Hi, I’m Sam. Welcome to my new page.
Maybe you’re here because you follow me on @thisismothership, maybe you’ve followed my writing since my magazine days, maybe you bought my best-selling book, ‘this is FASHION, this is BEAUTY, this is LIFE’ or maybe you’re one of my friends and family that have been made to follow me.
I’ve been sharing my life online for almost a decade but before that, I was head of the beauty department for Stylist Magazine. I won awards for my writing and my photoshoots, and I loved every second of it. But when motherhood collided with my career - and with no family in London to help - I had to re-think how to work when I needed to be at the school gate at 3pm. That’s partly why I’m here now on Substack: it feels like a way to reconnect with my favourite part of what I do - writing useful, honest, readable things - in a format that actually works for real life. Let’s be honest, sometimes a paragraph you can screenshot is way more helpful than trying to save something buried in a 10 minute video.
I’ll be posting twice a week fashion faves, the latest beauty launches, skincare advice, food I’m obsessed with, life updates, interiors inspo, travel tips - basically this is going to a big brain dump of everything behind the Insta Feed.
If you know what it’s like to still be scrolling for solutions/recipes/holidays/life admin at 10 pm when you should be asleep - same - then this is the place where I also want to share the stuff that actually makes life a little easier.
I won’t bore you with anymore of my life story, so in a bid to get to know each other better, here’s a few bits you may not know about me…
I was hit by a bus once on Oxford Street, outside Selfridges. I now have one shoulder blade higher than the other.
I have a hidden tattoo. It’s about 20 years old now. I got it in Thailand.
I once got 14% in a music test at school but I have an MA in International Journalism.
I got 100% in my theory test but took me 5x to pass my driving test.
I overthink everything, and it sometimes stops me from just doing the thing I should do. So, let’s do it.
