Some people invest in lighting. Some people care about thread count. I have quietly, methodically, turned my home into a low-grade olfactory empire. Not in a “welcome to the Four Seasons” way. More in a “every room has something to say” way.
Here’s the thing no one tells you about adulthood: you can’t control the news cycle, the economy, or whether someone misreads your text. But you can control whether your hallway smells like bergamot or burning toast. And that is the kind of subtle power I can get on board with.
This post is a scented tour of my house. Mine smells at times like sandalwood, sometimes neroli, you’ll turn a corner and get a whisper of jasmine, or smell amber wafting down the stairs. Let’s begin…
The Hallway: The White Company, Portofino Diffuser
When people stand at my doorway, they actually comment on how good my house smells. If you’re looking to give your hallway an instant “boutique hotel” upgrade, i promise you this is it.
Imagine stepping through the front door and being met with a sophisticated, airy scent that manages to feel expensive without being overbearing. It’s not heavy or cloying, but it’s elegant, crisp and breezy.
With notes of crushed neroli, aromatic sage, and sun-drenched bergamot, whether you’re coming home from a rainy commute or hosting guests, it sets a polished, serene tone before you’ve even kicked off your shoes. It’s the “clean girl aesthetic” for your home - understated, fresh, and undeniably luxe. Summer in a bottle.
The TV Room: Urban Apothocary, Oud Geranium Diffuser
The TV room is our sanctuary for family movie nights and Netflix marathons. We wanted a dark and moody vibe in here, so we colour drenched it in Squid Ink by Paint & Paper Library.
Moving away from the airy freshness of the hallway, this is a scent with serious depth and soul; the olfactory equivalent of sinking into a velvet sofa. We spent almost an hour smelling every diffuser Selfridges had to offer to find this one on Boxing Day. It’s “grown-up glamour” in a black glass jar; think dark, moody, and impossibly chic. The traditional, heavy richness of oud is uplifted by the fresh, green bite of geranium and sweet, smoky notes of patchouli creating a fragrance that lingers beautifully, making the space feel cocooning and intimate. The perfect companion for a glass of red and a great movie; it’s a sophisticated, “quiet luxury” scent that commands attention without ever shouting.
The Lounge: Jo Malone London, Golden Amber & Orange Diffuser
While the hallway is for arrivals and the TV room is for cocooning, the lounge is where we spend most of our time and host friends and family. It opens out onto the garden, through into the dining area and is the heart of our home. I fell in love with this lesser-known scent a couple of years ago, and knew when my house reno was complete that this was the scent of my lounge. Designed to mimic the feeling of late-afternoon sun streaming through a window, casting a warm, honeyed glow over the room, it’s a blend of bold bitter orange and smooth amber that is bright, yet soothing.
The orange notes keep the amber from feeling too heavy, giving the room a bright, cozy feel. It’s essentially a high-end cashmere blanket in scent form; warm, comfortable, and classic.
The Kitchen: NEOM It’s All Rosy Scented Candle (currently)
I have to admit the scent rotation in here changes all the time, but I’m firmly in the “candle over diffuser” camp for the kitchen. While a diffuser is lovely for a constant, low-level hum of fragrance, it just doesn’t have the muscle to tackle those post-dinner cooking smells.
This NEOM blend of rose, geranium, and orange is my current go-to for exactly that. It’s far more “wild English garden” than “cloying perfume counter” - a bright floral that leaves the room feeling properly clean and energised. Usually I’m not the biggest fan of rose scents, but this surprised me. It’s what the team at NEOM call a “sparkling” scent, and they’re right; it’s the perfect way to bring the outdoors in and hit the reset button after a busy family meal.
The Downstairs Loo: Molton Brown Delicious Rhubarb and Rose Diffuser
For me, the downstairs toilet needs a scent that is sharp, clean, and a little bit fun, much like the way we like to decorate in here. This scent is essentially “springtime in a bottle”; a bright, fizzy mix of tart rhubarb and fresh rose petals that keeps the space feeling incredibly airy.
The beauty of this one is the hit of zesty grapefruit and yuzu, which cuts through any heaviness and leaves the room smelling “just-cleaned” without the clinical vibe. It makes even the smallest space feel polished and curated.

all good suggestions. My issue with diffusers is that they don't last very long. Any tips?
